Week 2 of  the new year, and today we’re featuring Jeroen from Crossfit Enschede. Jeroen used to be a cyclist (as the Dutch man he is) and started doing crossfit as wintertraining to help his development. Now he’s as avid a crossfitter as any, and took his CFL1 certificate in August 2011. Jeroen opened up his home to me when I came over to do the same course, and together we had a very inspiring weekend together. He’s a great athlete, very enthusiastic about training and tremendously knowledgeable when it comes to food and proper diet – I’ve never been so well-fed as the weekend I spent at his house!

When and why did you start CrossFit? I started CrossFit as a winter training for my cycling. I got bored with the traditional fitness gym and had read about CrossFit on some Paleo blogs. I found a box just around the corner. At one of the off-road cycling training sessions that autumn I had a nasty bicycle crash. I started CrossFit training and it did a lot for my recovery. After that I never really went back to the cycling. Totally hooked. I did my Level I certification within the year.

What has CrossFit done for you? Besides the obvious physical changes the psychological effects have been huge for me. People talking about how CrossFit “changed their lives” made me laugh. I put that aside as commercial American over-the-top statements. Looking back now, it was not that far from the truth. I didn’t see that coming…

Goals? I dislocated my shoulder last October when trying to get to a new snatch PR while being tired and unconcentrated. That was a really stupid thing to do. Now I’m working hard to get back to my original strength and mobility without rushing it.

Goats? Upper body strength. Coming from only a couple of years of cycling this really needs some good hard work.

Favourite exercise? I have no particular favorite exercise, but I like the shorter WODs like couplets and triplets. These allow me to recover fast and do more training sessions. I try to do no more than one 20+ minutes session in a week.

Embarrassing moment? Farting sit ups and – of course – that stupid snatch.

You know you’re a crossfitter when…taking time for rest and recovery takes all the discipline you’ve got.
